It just seems like they hold a lot of power, more than teacher unions for example. Where does this power come from specifically. My apologies if this is the wrong sub. Thanks in advance

At its worst it is a union of professional bullies and at its best it is a union of people trying to preserve peace and civility. So you can be encouraged to support the union for very different reasons.
