Eli5: What’s the global definition for female in the animal kingdom?

I assumed it’s the one that carries/lays the offspring but I understood sea horse males carry the offsprings

A female animal produces the eggs where as the make animal produces the sperm.

The female seahorse produces the eggs, the fact that she doesn’t carry them is largely irrelevant. I believe penguins are similar in that the males cover the eggs after they are laid.
