Eli5 When an Athlete tears a muscle does he have to start over?

So let’s say a Basketball player tore a muscle in his leg bad to where it needed surgery. When he is in the rehabbing process, is he going to need to completely work that muscle out from scratch to build back strength? Or if a bodybuilder tore a muscle is it going to be super noticeably smaller?

Short answer, no.

Surgery to repair torn muscles usually involve reconnecting that muscle long enough for the muscle fibers to heal and rebuild. In a matter of months it’s usually comparable to it’s pre-injury strength. If there’s strength lost it’s because the muscle can’t be trained during recovery or Very Bad Things happen so we see some atrophy like someone who hasn’t worked out in a month.
