The full saying is actually freeze, fight or flight. it’s all part of the sympathetic nervous system, as to which one you use depends on what your sympathetic response believes is the one most likely to save your life. You can train your response with exposure training, reduce the effect of sympathetic response in favour of learned behaviours.
