ELi5: When we go outside at night, what happens to our eyes so that they adjust to dark and we’re able to see?

I’m sure everyone knows what I’m talking about, but I’m genuinely curious as to what the process in our eyes and brain is, so that after a period of time we’re able to see relatively well even without much moonlight.

The pupil in your eye gets bigger so that it lets more light in. The muscles in your eye expand and contract to open up the hole. Cameras work the same way, if you open up the aperture more light will come in. Note that a negative side effect of having a large aperture (large pupil) means that light will be coming in from more angles which results in a less clear image.
