eli5 When we have a dry season, where is that missing water?

If an area that usually gets a lot of rain during the rainy season is getting less and less rain each year, where is that water going? Is it landing somewhere else or is it evaporating into the atmosphere permanently?

It’s in other parts of the world.

For example, it could simply be raining into the ocean where it provides no benefits to anything on land.

Or it could be getting caught up in snowfields, glaciers, and ice caps (though that’s unlikely given the current state of things).
