Eli5.When you see a kid get their head stuck in the railings, why are they not able to get their head back through the same space again?

Imagine an arrow being shot into a wall. Going into the wall, it comes in at a point and expands the opening as the arrowhead transitions in place from point to broad tail. If you try to pull the arrow out, what comes out is that broad tail- it’s a different shape than the finer point.

This is also why if you get something lodged in your body you’re kinda better off leaving it in until you get proper medical attention- to remove it causes more damage bc of the same principle.

Put your finger in the plastic top of a coke lid from McDonald’s and then pull,

Somethings fit easy one way, but difficult to come back the same way, ears etc are easy to flatten going forward but in reverse it doesn’t have the same shape this stuck.

But hopefully someone can have a more scientific answer 😃
