ELi5 Where does feelings come from biologically?

Is it just the chemicals in our brains? Like I’m pretty sure guts don’t have that system.

We can explain triggers for feelings. For example, the nervous/anxious/“move now” feeling that you get when something scary happens is caused by your body releasing adrenaline.

What we really struggle with is explaining how we *perceive* those feelings.

A computer would adjust its behavior based on input. We too adjust our behavior based on input, but at the same time, we have sensations that we perceive at the same time. The mechanism for this is not known. There are theories, but none have smoking gun evidence or even much more than conjecture.
