Eli5 Who is J.D. Power? And why do car manufacturers need to say that they have such an award on every commercial?

I can’t watch any car commercials anymore because it seems like every one has this award. It’s like claiming that you have a NY Time Best Seller book. Not that special.

JD Power is an award you can buy. It’s a joke honestly. https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DzKN5Wl4uTyY&ved=2ahUKEwixhoSL86X6AhWWomoFHSfaCWMQwqsBegQICBAB&usg=AOvVaw16E33Q0xhH-PemYZHtxDdw

JD Power is an independent consulting firm. They monitor a bunch of different industries and produce a bunch of different studies to measure customer satisfaction. If your company is in the top five or so of one of their studies you’re allowed to advertise that you won an award in that category (a licensing fee is required). Since they’re an independent company, they have a high degree of trust among consumers that the companies that win their awards are actually good at whatever they win an award for.

Having said all of that, and having worked in the marketing department for quite awhile of a company with numerous JD Power awards… /u/illbeyourdrunkle is correct. In practice you pay them a large chunk of cash to get into one of their numerous, very narrow studies (I think ours is specifically customer satisfaction among new customers with the online shopping experience of a specific product line), and of you win (and to their credit it’s possible you don’t) you get to advertise the award for a certain period of time. They also send out consultants to explain your company’s results and provide advice on how you can improve.
