5G does not necessarily require more power than 4G. For the circumstances where it might, it’s because 5G is capable of operating with a higher frequency of radio waves than 4G.

A higher frequency radio wave allows for higher speed of data transmission, but it also means the signal is more susceptible to loss over a given distance compared to 4G frequencies. To compensate for the signal loss, the signal may need to be broadcast with more power, which draws more power from the phone.

The fifth generation cellular network allows multiple frequencies to be used, not all of them are higher frequency than 4G. And for those that are, the signal to the cellular base station may be clear enough to not necessarily need more transmission power.

5g connection would require more points for phone to connect from, which in turn requires more processing power from the receiver
