eli5 why abandoned houses get in rough shape, But lived in houses are fine after being unchanged for years?

I have seen so many videos on YouTube of homes that have been abandoned for 5-10 years and they are just falling apart, But then my house hasn’t been renovated or anything in 8 years or so, and it’s in good condition. Wouldn’t the same thing happen to my house since it’s unchanged?

Abandoned houses are targets for all sorts of things that lived in houses aren’t. Picture every homeless person in that area, or every teenage kid with nothing to do, animals and pests, etc. All these things tend not to care too much about the houses overall condition, where as a person living in said house, you naturally keep those things away by your presence and common sense maintenance.

A few broken windows, or random holes in walls let all the elements of nature into the house where it can rot away at the house rapidly. Animals chew everything, insects too, moisture trapped in the floors and the walls.
