Whilst your observation is true for some, it is a generalisation to say that babies are fat for their first few months. Some certainly are, but not all. I would imagine that from a survival perspective, being born chubbier would increase chances of survival.

Babies are born with a special type of “brown fat” that helps to insulate and also burn for heat production. They also need plenty of energy to grow. And they haven’t exactly been working out in the womb so their muscles are not developed much yet
