eli5 why are bike gears opposite on the left and right?

Like, on a mountainbike you have two levers, one for the index finger and one for the thumb. why does on the right side the index give a “harder” gear and on the left the index finger lever give a “easier” gear? couldn’t they both give high and low gear in the same direction?

Take a fraction like 13/5.

You can make it larger by increasing the first number (eg 15/5) or decreasing the bottom number (eg 13/3).

A bike gear system is this ratio principle. More thumb work to increase the front sprocket. More thumb work to decrease the rear sprocket.
