eli5 why are bike gears opposite on the left and right?

Like, on a mountainbike you have two levers, one for the index finger and one for the thumb. why does on the right side the index give a “harder” gear and on the left the index finger lever give a “easier” gear? couldn’t they both give high and low gear in the same direction?

They can, and i even owned one like this for some time.
The problem is that you have to produce two mirrored sets of ratchet mechanisms, which is not economical.
When my bike was in the shop for maintenance, they replaced both of them with the same spare part, since a mirrored version was to hard to get.
