Why are some memories so vivid when the actual events we are recalling were just random moments. For example, I clearly remember a time I was sitting on my grandparents back porch waiting for relatives from another state to visit. I vividly remember the headlights from the car shining on the garage door when they pulled into the driveway. A good memory but something fairly nondescript. Why do we remember certain seemingly random details so clearly?

Very difficult question and this is not an expert opinion. I will just point out an interesting fact.
When you think you remember past incidents vividly, it may not be that you remember a reality at all. As humans we often change our memories for various reasons, we also fill in the blanks, we make up the details as trying to recall an event.
So those vivid details, some of them you might just have made up 🙂
