Eli5: Why are fried clam strips so much cheaper than whole belly clams? I would assume they use the same number of clams, no?

Basically the same reason that cashew halves and pieces are cheaper than whole cashews. During manufacturing some of them are damaged and wouldn’t fit the “whole” packaging, but are still a worthwhile product to sell.
