ELi5: Why are humans rather obsessed with having most of things set to an even number? It’s almost an internal crime to set the volume on the TV to 19 instead of 20, or set the brightness to 59 instead of 60.

On the contrary, I’ve noticed that the spokes (or whatever the formal name is) on car wheels and the number of bolts are often different. They are both frequently odd numbers. Five bolts are every common; I saw a five bolt, seven spoke today.

Once you start noticing, it’s hard to not do so.
