Eli5: Why are petrol engines not built like diesel engines in terms of reliability?

Diesel engines easily run 400.000km especially Mercedes cars but petrol will give up way sooner

One of the big factors is that diesel engines generally operate at a lower rpm. Think of it in terms of total rotations in a lifetime. Any engine rotating faster will reach the end of its life faster.
