eli5 Why are pickled cucumbers “Pickles” and other pickled things are “Pickled X”?

Were cucumbers the first vegetable to ever be pickled? Wondering how they got the distinction

Because it’s the most common item that is pickled. In the US, that’s pickled cucumbers. In other places that pickle other items more commonly, it can refer to those things instead.

Because you’re in America. In Japan, pickles are pickled ginger.

I worked with a lady who had some unreasonable issues around cucumbers, but would regularly eat pickles. We didn’t have the heart to tell her for so long and then at some point somebody let it slip, and it was like her world was destroyed. Like she seriously freaked out and started crying and went home early.
