Eli5: why are propellers on the front of planes but the rear of boats?

The thought just came across my mind and I simply cannot think of a good answer, especially not knowing much about the mechanics of it all.

Take a look at the PT6A-66 pusher props. They are rear facing and one spins one way with one spinning the other direction to counteract the torque generated. This is not normally required for front facing props.
