It may seem dumb to ask, but seagulls are literally everywhere! And yet they have sea in their name! They should be called landgulls

Gulls have evolved to be very good at hunting and breeding in coastal areas. So they spend a lot of their time in this environment. However they can venture far inland. Either on shorter trips “commuting” over a hundred miles in a day or seasonal migrations.

This have become more common as cities have much of the same environmental factors as coastlines where the gulls have adapted. Buildings resembles the cliffs where gulls nest to escape predators. The city environment also requires a high intellect to survive. Landfills and trash cans provides feeding ground for scavengers just like beaches at low tide. So gulls are one of the few species which have adapted well to cities and might prefer an inland city to the coastline. Cities even have warm places to hide during cold winter nights so some gulls might even spend the winter in a city instead of migrating to warmer places.
