The title fairly sums up my question

As a snowflake falls, it passes through areas with variations in temperature and humidity. Different conditions cause different types of growth in the snowflake. If all sides of the snowflake are experiencing the same conditions at the same time, they will all grow similarly. Spinning also helps keep things consistent on all sides. But no snowflake is perfectly symmetrical, and many will have notable asymmetries.
