Why are sponges damp when you remove them from their packages? How do they not hold that moisture and mold in their packages?

It’s all about perception. A dry sponge is small and kind of gross looking. So they add a bit of distilled water to the package to ensure it stays the size you’d expect your sponge to be on your counter.
Is it though? I never noticed it being damp before.
What? I have never bought sponges that are already damp
