ELi5: Why are sponges damp out of the package?

Why are sponges damp when you remove them from their packages? How do they not hold that moisture and mold in their packages?

It’s all about perception. A dry sponge is small and kind of gross looking. So they add a bit of distilled water to the package to ensure it stays the size you’d expect your sponge to be on your counter.
