It’s down to the amount of stuff you are looking through. Sideways light has further to travel to get to you, going through more cloud, straight down there is less cloud to go through. I reckon.

probably because of light shining on them from above an behind, causing all kinds of weird shadows, outlines and shades of grey. when they’re above you, you don’t (or more likey only) see the shadow. and if it rains, it gets even more monochrome.

Have you ever played with the iso on a camera? *I think* it’s because if you’re in an area with relatively more sunlight, it will appear darker. Once it’s blocking out the light, your eyes adjust and it seems a lighter shade. It could also your location/geography changing the density of the cloud.
