eli5: Why are storm clouds so menacingly black from a distance but just grey when over you?

Have you ever played with the iso on a camera? *I think* it’s because if you’re in an area with relatively more sunlight, it will appear darker. Once it’s blocking out the light, your eyes adjust and it seems a lighter shade. It could also your location/geography changing the density of the cloud.
