eli5: Why are storm clouds so menacingly black from a distance but just grey when over you?

probably because of light shining on them from above an behind, causing all kinds of weird shadows, outlines and shades of grey. when they’re above you, you don’t (or more likey only) see the shadow. and if it rains, it gets even more monochrome.
