Squirrels actually do eat garbage. It’s not their first choice, but they will if pressed. It happened in Vancouver, BC when due to a really weird set of circumstances, their option number one food source was cut off, so they began raiding garbage cans.

Squirrels are one of them as well as many rodents, pigeons, raccoons, foxes, coyotes, sparrows, skunks, opossums, roaches and flies. Essentially these animals can easily find food in areas populated by humans and so you will find many of them in those areas.

I rehab squirrels. Humans and their habitats are ideal for squirrels. They eat a wide variety of things. Plus humans will feed them. Either directly or indirectly through bird feeders garbage or just sitting in a park and tossing food at them. Squirrels are highly intelligent. They are great problem solvers and they adapt well to varying conditions. I have great respect for squirrels. Plus they are super cuddly and love to play games. I enjoy rehabbing them and releasing them back to their natural environment.
