ELI5- Why can’t an individual remain constantly in a state of euphoria or high? Why does everything eventually return to normal?

I just had this random thought while lying on my roof, listening to “Young Dumb & Broke,” and being in that same state.

You can be in a perpetual state of euphoria. Babies often are.

Also, if you only ever experienced the world lit up, would you have any appreciation of the dark alternative? I like to feel happy, because I know how it feels to feels sad.

It is very possible that through meditation, you actually CAN be remain in a heightened state and then the heightened state becomes the new “normal”. There was an old guru who ate a raw gram crystal of LSD (which would make someone trip for like a year basically) and he literally felt nothing. Because he achieved a heightened state the psychedelic didn’t change his normal. All psychedelics do is mimic the chemicals you already have in your mind, a tool to show you what you’re truly capable of.

actually, its an evolutionary thing. evolution developed happy feelings rewards randomly. some beings got rewards for wrong actions and die out, others had those rewards for too long, so they did not react on dangerous situations and die off. this way evolution regulated the time, how long it would be ok to be euphoric without disadvantages. it took a lot of trial and errors and it will not change over night.

It’s like Syndrome said in The Incredibles. When everyone’s Super, no one is.

But yeah, what is normal?
