Eli5, Why can’t suits be washed in the washing machine?

Everything can be washed if you handle it properly. A washing machine applies mechanical action which when mixed with moisture can damage the tensile strength and bonding of moisture sensitive fabrics such as wool, linen, silk, and even cotton. You can see a breakdown in the fusion between the shell fabric and the bonding fabric which would give a bubbly appearance, seams could break where the nylon stitching pulls through the weakened shell fabric, and/or the shell fabric could fracture. I guess the ELI5 answer could be to consider if you were to glue some paper together and then dip it in water, you could then hang it up and allow it to dry with only minor damage, but if you dipped it into water and shook it around, it would break up.
