eli5 Why can’t the person I’m on the phone with hear the video my phone is playing?

Phones are designed to avoid having sound from the speaker going back into the microphone. If not, you can get feedback…that high pitched squeal that no one likes. Some phones even go a step further. They subtract the speaker output signal from the microphone input signal, for the same reason.
