Eli5: Why can’t we burn plastic and use it as fuel since it’s flamable?

Sorry if this was asked before, but is the only problem that it has a bigger carbon footprint to burn than gas?

Plastic burns, when you mix gasoline/diesel with air it explodes. You can use that explosion to push a piston.

When plastic burns it leaves behind this really sticky hard to clean stuff.
So if you just use plastic to heat water you’re going to have to spend a lot of money cleaning it.
