Eli5: Why cant we just signal to our brain when we want to fall asleep?

When we lay down at night why our brain does not recognize it and make us fall asleep much easier? Interesting that we have control over so much things but not our own body.

This is one of the many places where your rational mind isn’t trusted to be in charge. Evolutionary logic suggests we evolved the things that kept us alive. So, if the deeper, more primal parts of the brain get a signal your should be afraid of something, for example, it’s may not care if your higher reason can’t find logical reasons for it, it’s gonna trip the alarm anyway, to prevent your dumb ass from getting eaten by a lion.

Similarly, with sleep, you’re not trusted with full control. Your brain tells YOU when it’s time to sleep, or when something is the matter and you shouldn’t sleep, because you’ll probably screw it up.
