eli5: Why did we go from calling sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

You can still call them STDs. Change was made to use a more scientific and specific term. Diseases encompases the infections but if something is transmitted, it’s caused by an external factor and if it’s not poison it’s an infection.
