eli5 – Why do apartments have higher air pressure in the hallways than in the units?

Moved into a condo and noticed a whistle coming from the door. This seems to be pretty consistent with many buildings I’ve been in and interested to know why.

This has to do in the event of a fire. It will keep smoke in the unit that’s on fire keeping the hallway as clear of smoke as possible for evacuation. You likely have a heat sensor in your unit that’s attached to the building’s fire alarm system. Google heat detector for fire alarms and you can see what they look like. Basically in apartments and condo buildings you have the smoke detector in your unit that’s for the purposes of letting you know you have something burning in your unit, and that heat detector for when it becomes a threat to the building.
