eli5 – Why do apartments have higher air pressure in the hallways than in the units?

Moved into a condo and noticed a whistle coming from the door. This seems to be pretty consistent with many buildings I’ve been in and interested to know why.

I don’t think this is common. The air pressure have to do with air vents, air conditioning, or heat making higher pressure in the hall area. It also would have the advantage of keeping outside air from blasting in, an advantage in dirty cities. It made me laugh to think it is like a lab with negative pressure to keep your apartment germs and stink in and outside building air out.
