I’m specifically recalling a case where a local mom woke up to find her 10 year old son dead. Perfectly healthy and just died in his sleep. 6 months later it was determined he died of an aneurysm. Did they just not suspect foul play? Would the autopsy have happened quicker if they had? Does the autopsy itself take a long time or is it a paperwork/political thing?

yup, the autopsy takes a couple hours, depending on the staffing of the medical examiners office, it can be done in a day or two or a week.
but the tests and the final report can take months.
this happened with my favorite tavern server. it was assumed to be a heart attack, or anerysm …. at least that’s what her family said. turned out it was a fentanyl overdose. apparently she got what she thought was a oxy pill. her death cert wasn’t released for 8 months.
