eli5 why do bare trees seem purple in winter?

when you see rolling hills of bare trees they often look purple but up close they’re brown. why?

I could be wrong, but the explanation that was given to me was that it has to do with the properties of the atmosphere between the observer and the object. If an observer is sufficiently far from an object, the air between them scatters enough reddish light to make the objects seem blue-tinged.
