Bats have tiny legs, so they can’t get a running start. This makes sleeping on the ground not helpful, because they can’t escape easily.

Being up high helps them avoid predators, so bats want to be up high when sleeping. In addition, their leg muscles are “backwards.” Their talons actually clench when the rest of their muscles relax. That means hanging is the most relaxing position in terms of stress on their muscles.
