Eli5: Why do cable boxes take so long to boot up? Ocap? L-8/1? What is it even doing?

It has to handshake with home base, verify what it is, run a self test to make sure no major problems exist. Then home base has to verify the box and that the firmware is correct and if not update it… all this done with hardware that is a few generations old to make the whole thing more cost effective but leads to it being slow as molasses.
