The small particles that make up a smell and enter our nose are either just more potent, stick around longer and continue to smell due to that potency. But eventually your brain will get used to the smell and it will lessen / you won’t notice it unless another smell comes along to make you aware of the change. Also changing the intensity of the smell – if it gets stronger will make you aware of it. But in reality it isn’t gone or “goes away”.
Just had this last night, was at a friends house outside by a fire pit and you don’t realize how strong the smell is until you change your environment (go indoors) or when you come home and realize how strong the smell is.
