Eli5: Why do contact lenses stay on your pupil?

Your eye isn’t a perfect circle. The pupil / cornea sits higher off the eye. Contacts create almost a suction to keep it on the eye.

Since they maintain moisture and they have a smooth outer finish your eyelids can move over them without knocking them off.

You’re eye isn’t perfectly round so that creates a surface/shelf to hang onto so to speak. Contacts can slip around to other places on the eyeball and that sucks to get out.
