Eli5 Why do dead phones come back to life after a while? Where does the extra charge come from?

I had an iPhone 5 that would die at 16% every time and full charge only last a day in the UK. When I went to Africa it lasted 3 days and was on 1% for half a day and I believe because it was hot.
Also have you ever used an old lighter that ran out of gas completely all of a sudden have a last ignition evety time you leave it a long time! Amazed lol
