eli5 Why do different elements and compounds have seemingly random properties?

I don’t know if I’m asking the right question, but I feel like the smallest change in the chemical composition of something will result in a change that’s entirely unpredictable. It feels like there is no clear pattern in properties as you move down the periodic table.

I understand the question you’re asking but there is no answer. Each individual case would be it’s own study of the quantum mechanics involved in that molecules interaction, not to mention the potentially infinite number of molecules and interactions that could occur.

There’s no answer, but I am very glad you understand that even the most seemingly miniscule chemical differences can have massive differences in effect. Some people don’t seem to understand that and think chemistry is quite simple….
