The question pretty much sums it up. What makes door hinges any hinges start to squeak. Does something dry up?

I think most hinges are manufactured with some level of lubricant on assembly. Over time that lubricant can wear out which leads to metal rubbing on metal producing a squeaking noise.

Like muadibsburner says, there’s some lubrication in the hinge when it’s installed, and over time that goes away if it isn’t replaced. The metal itself can slowly wear down too, as repeated rubbing erodes material from the pieces. The material that wears off, can then become gritty particles that get stuck inside the joint, making it move more crunchily.

Additionally, the hinges aren’t perfectly rigid, and neither are the things they’re attached to. As they gradually change shape over time, they don’t fit together in quite the same way they did. A little bit of shear or twisting-force can easily mess up the alignment of the hinge parts so that they aren’t perfectly square to the doorframe anymore, and when that happens you’re in Squeaky City.
