Eli5: Why do earbuds sound so different when you take them off? Shouldn’t they sound the same, just lower?

When fitted snugly into your ear, the earbud isn’t just channeling sound from its tiny driver through the air toward your eardrum – it’s also conducting some sound through your flesh and bone. When you take it out of your ear, you’re losing that effect.
