I’ve always heard that EVs are not a great option if you live in really cold areas due to them not being very efficient in the cold. Why is that? And do gas powered vehicles have the same issue?

Note that it does entirely depend on what you mean by “struggling”. There have been a few “shock” reports lately about EVs failing to start in extreme low temperatures (lower than -40 celsius) but the articles omit that ICE vehicles have the exact same issue.
