ElI5: Why do electric vehicles struggle in the cold?

1.05K viewsEngineeringOther

I’ve always heard that EVs are not a great option if you live in really cold areas due to them not being very efficient in the cold. Why is that? And do gas powered vehicles have the same issue?

They are fantastic in the cold!  They just have reduced range, sometimes as much as half.  I’ve got an Ariya AWD with 205 miles of range.  It’s projecting about 130 miles in -5 F weather.    This doesn’t affect my ability to take a 70 mile round trip with range to spare.
