Eli5: Why do guys get random boners when they go through puberty?

Puberty, in both boys and girls, is a time of great change in the body. Things are growing bigger, hormones are increasing, and the body has to get used to it.
So, when a kid or teen gets embarrassed or scared, sometimes the body… Reacts. And it is normal, and does not mean or imply anything directly sexual.
Those tissues need to stretch regularly to maintain their elasticity, and the hydraulics need to get used so they continue to function optimally. So bodies just pop boners sometimes because they’re basically running systems checks and keeping everything in working order. It isn’t particularly sexual in those cases.
