Eli5: Why do humans have nails?

Nails are very useful is why we have them. They do any number of things from peeling fruit to climbing to grooming. I heard somewhere that our nails are shaped the way that they are and not like claws is that its easier to groom with and thereby make friends. Way before we had language at least. Ever have a gf pop pimples on your back? Its exactly that but without talking lol
